CKAD: is the Kubernetes developer exam the right proof for your work?
As of November 2026, the Linux Foundation charges $445 for the Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD) exam, with one retake and two practice-simulator sessions included. Its $625 THRIVE-ONE bundle adds a year of e-learning, including the LFD259 course, and comes in under the $645 exam-plus-LFD259 bundle. A first attempt across the options below runs $445 to $3,495. If you already build and containerize applications, plan on 4 to 8 weeks of lab practice (our estimate).
Key facts
- The CKAD exam costs $445 and includes one retake, two Killer.sh simulator sessions and 12 months to schedule. (Linux Foundation, checked November 5, 2026)
- CKAD is a 2-hour, online, proctored exam of command-line tasks, based on Kubernetes v1.37, with no prerequisites. (Linux Foundation, checked November 5, 2026)
- You need 66% or more to pass. (Linux Foundation FAQ, checked November 5, 2026)
- CKAD is valid for 2 years (3 years if earned before April 1, 2024), and you renew it by passing the exam again. (Linux Foundation FAQ, checked November 5, 2026)
What CKAD proves, and for whom
The Linux Foundation says CKAD "focuses on the skills required to be a successful Kubernetes Application Developer" and that the exam "assumes working knowledge of container runtimes and microservice architecture". In practice that means building container images, choosing the right workload resource, rolling out and rolling back deployments, wiring in configuration and secrets, adding health checks and exposing services. It does not ask you to build or repair the cluster itself.
A good fit if
- You write or maintain services that run on Kubernetes and want proof you can deploy and configure them yourself
- You already build container images and read YAML manifests without a reference open
- You work in a DevOps or platform-facing developer role where Helm and Kustomize are part of releases
Think twice if
- You have not yet worked with containers: the free Introduction to Kubernetes course and some Docker practice come first
- Your job is running, upgrading and troubleshooting clusters rather than the applications on them
- You would rather sit a multiple-choice exam: CKAD is graded on live tasks against a clock
Consider instead: If you run the clusters, see the CKA. For cloud deployment work tied to one provider, see AWS Developer Associate, or on Azure AI-200, which replaced AZ-204.
How the CKAD exam works
There is no formal eligibility rule: the Linux Foundation lists no prerequisites. What you need in practice is comfort with containers and a terminal. The exam is online and proctored, and every item is a task you solve at a command line in 2 hours. It runs on Kubernetes v1.37, and the Linux Foundation moves the exam to each new minor release within about 4 to 8 weeks of it. The pass mark is 66%.
| Domain | Weight |
|---|---|
| Application design and build | 20% |
| Application deployment | 20% |
| Application observability and maintenance | 15% |
| Application environment, configuration and security | 25% |
| Services and networking | 20% |
The heaviest domain covers configuration and security inside the application: ConfigMaps, Secrets, resource requests and limits, service accounts and security contexts. Each of the two Killer.sh simulator sessions gives 36 hours of access and 17 questions, with a different set each time.
Ways to prepare
Free. The Linux Foundation's LFS158 Introduction to Kubernetes is a free, self-paced course of 15 to 20 hours. It is background for newcomers, not CKAD preparation on its own.
Official self-paced. LFD259 Kubernetes for Developers has 35 hours of material and costs $299 alone. Bought with the exam, it is $645; the THRIVE-ONE annual bundle at $625 includes LFD259 plus the rest of the Linux Foundation's e-learning, so it is the better buy of the two.
Independent labs. KodeKloud's CKAD course pairs videos with cloud labs and two mock exams. It suits people who learn by repetition in a browser terminal.
Official live class. LFD459 Kubernetes for App Developers is three days with an instructor, uses Python examples and is aimed at experienced application developers. Enrollment includes the CKAD exam with its retake and simulator sessions.
CKAD costs by route
| Route | Provider and course | Published price | Exam fee | First attempt |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Exam only | Linux Foundation, CKAD exam with one retake and two Killer.sh simulator sessions, 12 months to schedule. Checked November 5, 2026. | $0 | + $445 exam | $445 |
| Video course with labs | KodeKloud, CKAD course with cloud labs and two mock exams, on the Standard plan at USD 180 billed annually (USD 228 regular, shown struck through when checked; the plan lists certification courses and mock exams but does not name CKAD). Checked November 5, 2026. | $180 | + $445 exam | $625 |
| Exam with a one-year subscription | Linux Foundation, CKAD exam plus THRIVE-ONE annual subscription, which includes the LFD259 self-paced course and all other Linux Foundation e-learning. Checked November 5, 2026. | $625 | Included | $625 |
| Exam with the official course | Linux Foundation, CKAD exam plus LFD259 Kubernetes for Developers (self-paced, 35 hours). Checked November 5, 2026. | $645 | Included | $645 |
| Official live class | Linux Foundation, LFD459 Kubernetes for App Developers, 3 days instructor-led, with CKAD registration, one retake and two simulator attempts. Checked November 5, 2026. | $3,495 | Included | $3,495 |
Beyond the first attempt. The retake is already in the $445 price. A KodeKloud subscription renews yearly. Renewal two years on means paying for the exam again. The Linux Foundation also lists a money-back guarantee on the exam page; read its terms before relying on it.
Comparing CKAD training offers
- Labs on the current Kubernetes release. The exam runs v1.37 now and follows new releases within about 4 to 8 weeks. Ask any course which version its labs use and how fast it updates.
- Exam included or not. All three Linux Foundation bundles include the exam; KodeKloud does not, so add $445.
- Mock exams on top of the simulator. The exam comes with two Killer.sh sessions. KodeKloud lists two mock exams of its own; ask other providers how many timed practice tests they give.
- Access length. LFD459 gives 12 months of access to its course materials, and THRIVE-ONE is an annual subscription. Plan to sit the exam inside that window.
Keeping CKAD current
CKAD earned on or after April 1, 2024 is valid for 2 years; earlier certificates were issued for 3. To renew, you pass the exam again before it expires, and the new certificate runs 2 years from that pass. The CKS rule that extends a CKA does not mention CKAD, so plan on retaking it.
Questions developers ask about CKAD
- Do I need the CKA first?
- No. CKAD has no prerequisites, and the two exams cover different jobs: applications for CKAD, clusters for CKA.
- Which Kubernetes version is tested?
- v1.37 as of November 2026, updated to new minor releases within about 4 to 8 weeks.
- Is there a free retake?
- Yes. The $445 exam includes one retake and 12 months to use both attempts.
- What is the pass mark?
- 66%.
