Where Terraform Associate fits
Terraform Associate shows you can write and manage infrastructure as code with Terraform 1.12; it tests Terraform itself, not any one cloud's services. Terraform Associate works well alongside a cloud certification such as AWS Solutions Architect Associate or AZ-104, because it shows you can provision that cloud with code.

- You are moving from setting up cloud resources by hand to managing them in code, and want a clear target to study toward
Think twice if
- You have not built anything in a cloud yet: learn the platform first, then automate it
- Your team uses a different infrastructure-as-code tool
- You need to show knowledge of a cloud platform's own services rather than of Terraform
Consider instead: A cloud certification first, such as AWS Solutions Architect Associate, AZ-104 or Google Associate Cloud Engineer; CKA if your work centers on Kubernetes.
About the 004 exam
The current exam, version 004, tests Terraform 1.12. It is a one-hour, multiple-choice exam taken online with a remote proctor. HashiCorp recommends professional experience with Terraform or practice in your own setup. The certification expires after two years; you can renew by retaking the current exam starting six months before expiry, or by passing a higher Terraform exam. HashiCorp publishes the differences between the 003 and 004 exams; if you studied for 003, review those before booking.
Preparing for version 004
Free material and your own setup. HashiCorp's free 004 tutorials and review page, plus practice in your own Terraform project, cover the exam for people who already use Terraform.
A low-cost course. A Udemy video course of about 23 hours, or KodeKloud's course with labs on a yearly subscription, gives you a structured order if you are newer to Terraform.

Because there is no free retake, a failed attempt costs another $70.50. A practice set and time in a real Terraform project are the cheapest insurance.
Picking a Terraform course
- That it teaches 004, not 003. Version 004 tests Terraform 1.12, and HashiCorp publishes the differences from 003. Both paid courses in the table are titled for 004.
- What your KodeKloud plan includes. The Standard subscription is $180 a year, billed annually; check that your plan tier includes the Terraform Associate course.
- Hands-on practice. KodeKloud's course includes labs; with a video-only course, plan to practise in your own Terraform setup.
- Practice questions. With no free retake, a failed attempt costs another $70.50, so a course or set with practice questions is worth having.
Certifying a platform team
At $70.50 an exam, certifying a whole platform team costs little. The larger cost is study time; a shared internal practice environment helps more than buying classes.
