ITIL 4 Foundation or PRINCE2 Foundation: running IT services or running projects

As of November 2026, PeopleCert's cheapest listing for each exam is a bundle with the voucher included: $690 for ITIL 4 Foundation and $701 for PRINCE2 Foundation (Version 7), each with the official eBook and a learning kit. Three-day classes with the voucher cost $1,995 to $2,515 for ITIL 4 and $2,490 for PRINCE2 at the providers we priced. Both are one-hour, closed-book exams with no prerequisite, and both renew every three years. PeopleCert plans to retire all ITIL 4 modules on December 31, 2027.

Services or projects: what each exam covers

With the same issuer, nearly the same price and the same one-hour format, the two look interchangeable, but they cover different ground. ITIL Foundation tests the shared vocabulary and core ideas of IT service management, the way an organization runs IT as services for the people who use them; it is the common language of service desk and operations teams. PRINCE2 Foundation tests one project method: its seven principles, its practices and processes, the project roles, and how to tailor the method to the project in front of you. Version 7 adds a people element and folds sustainability into project performance.

Neither tests a tool or hands-on skill. ITIL Foundation is 40 questions with a 65% pass mark; PRINCE2 Foundation is 60 questions with a 60% pass mark, both in an hour. Applying PRINCE2 to a scenario is what its Practitioner exam tests, open book over 150 minutes.

Bundle and class prices for each

First-attempt prices from the cost tables on our ITIL 4 Foundation and PRINCE2 Foundation pages, US prices checked November 5, 2026. Every route includes the exam voucher.
RouteITIL 4 FoundationPRINCE2 Foundation
PeopleCert self-study bundle$690$701
PeopleCert eLearning (adds interactive lessons and sample papers)$1,029$1,029
PeopleCert eLearning+ (adds a free retake and an official mock exam)$1,338$1,338
Three-day class, voucher included$1,995 (New Horizons) to $2,515 (Learning Tree, with a Take2 re-sit)$2,490 (Learning Tree, with a Take2 re-sit on public events)

PeopleCert prices its eLearning tiers identically for the two exams, so the only difference at the official price points is $11 on the self-study bundle. Both bundles together cost $1,391. A retake is the cost to plan for: without eLearning+ or a class that includes one, a failed attempt means buying again. For PRINCE2, PeopleCert's Take2 re-sit add-on has to be bought before the exam. PeopleCert vouchers last 12 months, but PeopleCert has not yet announced last-use dates for ITIL 4 vouchers.

Picking ITIL or PRINCE2 for your role

The ITIL 4 end date and what it changes

PeopleCert says its current plan is to sunset all ITIL 4 modules on December 31, 2027, with ITIL 4 and Version 5 running in parallel until then. ITIL Foundation (Version 5) has the same 40-question, 60-minute, 65% format and the same $690 bundle price, so for a new buyer with free choice the comparison is really PRINCE2 against ITIL Version 5. Anyone who already holds ITIL 4 Foundation can move to Version 5 with the $263 Foundation Bridge, a 20-question exam on the changes. PRINCE2 has no equivalent deadline: PeopleCert's Version 7 pages name no successor.
