Getting your employer to pay for a certification
A specific request is easier to approve: one certification, an itemized cost, the dates you will be away and what the team gets from it. As of November 2026 those costs run from a $150 AWS exam with free training to $4,495 for a five-day CCNA class with the exam, so the cheapest credible route matters as much as the course you want. Under US tax law an employer can pay up to $5,250 a year of education for you tax-free through a written educational assistance plan, and job-related training can be tax-free above that. Before you accept, ask whether the company will make you repay the cost if you leave.
The numbers your request needs
| Certification | Exam fee | Cheapest first attempt | Live class, exam included | Keeping it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CompTIA Security+ | $439 | $439 | $2,495 to $2,790 | $150 and 50 CEUs every 3 years |
| Microsoft AZ-104 | $165 | $165 | $2,560 to $2,660 | Free online assessment every year |
| Cisco CCNA | $300 | $300 | $3,795 to $4,495 | 30 CE credits or an exam every 3 years |
| AWS Solutions Architect Associate | $150 | $150 | $2,175 to $2,935 | Pass the current exam every 3 years ($150 today) |
| PMI PMP | $675 ($425 members) | $1,474 | $2,670 to $4,025 | 60 PDUs and a PMI fee every 3 years |
Every other certification guide on this site has the same figures with the provider and date behind each one. Copy the two rows you need into your request rather than a single total, so your manager can see what the extra money buys.
What to write
The work it supports. Name a system, project or duty: "we are moving three services to Azure next quarter" carries more weight than "cloud skills". If a customer contract or job description names the certification, quote it.
Two priced options. The cheapest route that you believe will work (often the exam fee with free official training, such as Microsoft Learn or AWS Skill Builder), and the class you would prefer, with the provider, dates and whether the voucher is included. Say why the difference is worth it, if it is: a deadline, or a hands-on exam you have struggled to practice for alone.
Time. A five-day class is five days away from work. Self-study is evenings or protected hours; say how many a week you are asking for.
A retake plan. State who pays if you fail the first attempt. Offering to cover a retake yourself can settle it.
Renewal. Include the renewal rule from the table. Microsoft's free yearly renewal and CompTIA's $150 three-year fee look very different on a budget.
The tax rules, briefly
Under Section 127 of the Internal Revenue Code, an employer with a written educational assistance plan can pay up to $5,250 per employee in 2026 for tuition, fees, books and similar costs without it counting as your income. The IRS says the courses do not have to be work-related. The plan can also pay student loans within the same $5,250, a provision the 2025 tax law made permanent, and the limit is indexed to inflation for tax years after 2026. The IRS lists tuition and fees but does not name certification exam fees specifically, so ask your employer how its plan treats them.
Above $5,250, training can still be tax-free as a working condition benefit when it is job-related, for example when it maintains or improves skills you need in your current job. Training that you need to meet the minimum requirements of your current job, or that qualifies you for a new trade or business, does not count. Your employer's payroll team decides how to treat each course; this is general information, not tax advice.
Repayment agreements
Some employers ask you to sign a training repayment agreement: if you leave within a set time, you repay part or all of the cost. Read it before the course starts, and ask: Is it a separate written agreement? Is the amount fixed and no more than what the company actually paid, with no interest? Does it fall month by month over the required period? Does it cover only the outside course and exam, or internal training too? What happens if you are laid off? Some states limit these terms. Colorado (HB24-1324, effective August 7, 2024), for example, allows repayment only for training separate from normal on-the-job training and subject to its Attorney General's rules, and other states have passed or are changing their own rules, so check yours. If the terms look one-sided, ask for a shorter period or a falling balance.
If the answer is no
Ask what would change it: a cheaper route, a later quarter, or a different certification. Then look at the cheapest first attempt in the table. For AZ-104 or AWS Solutions Architect Associate that is the exam fee with free official training, small enough to pay yourself and ask for reimbursement after passing.
Questions
- How do I ask my boss to pay for a certification?
- In writing, with the work it supports, two priced options (cheapest route and preferred class), the time you need, a retake plan and the renewal cost.
- Is employer-paid training taxable?
- Up to $5,250 a year through a written Section 127 plan is tax-free in 2026, work-related or not. Job-related training above that can also be tax-free as a working condition benefit.
- Do I have to pay back training if I quit?
- Only if you signed an agreement that says so, and some states, Colorado among them, limit those agreements.
